Loyola closes all fall 2020 abroad programs

Loyola closes all fall 2020 abroad programs

On May 18, the Office of International Programs notified students planning to study abroad in the fall that all programs are cancelled.

Dr. André Colombat, Dean of International Programs, wrote to those enrolled in fall programs about the risks and unknowns attached to international travel at this time.

“How will foreign countries, universities, and airlines accommodate foreign students in light of Covid-19, and what will be the welfare of our students should there be a ‘second wave’ of the virus as predicted by many medical experts?” said Colombat.

While these questions have led to the cancellation of all fall programs, the Office of International Programs is trying to accommodate these enrollees for the spring of 2021. Those in cancelled programs have until June 15 to email the office with interest in going abroad in the spring. Dr. Colombat notes that each program will be able to handle the “fall overflow” differently. Some programs may be more limited than others. Because of this, students can request to be considered for another program and should write this in their email.

Those who had fall study abroad plans should email [email protected] with the classes they wish to take in Baltimore for the fall of 2020. Students are reminded to monitor what classes they will need to take or save, should they wish to study abroad in the spring.

Students can also expect an update from Student Life next week regarding housing options. In the hopes that Loyola will reopen in the fall, the University plans to provide campus housing “on a space-available basis.” Fall abroad enrollees are encouraged to communicate if they will request housing through Loyola or find their own.

The Office of International Programs continues to provide updates via their webpage. Additionally, students with questions about registering for next semester’s courses should contact the Academic Advising and Support Center.

For updates on housing options from Student Life and all COVID-19-related changes at Loyola, keep up-to-date with The Greyhound.
