The unpredictable 2025 NFL season culminated in a one-sided Super Bowl. The Seattle Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots 29-13, with the Seahawks outscoring the Patriots in every quarter and dominating on defense.
Super Bowl 60 was held in Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers. The game started at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, and at 3:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. As the sun set in San Francisco, the sun set for the chance of a seventh Patriots Super Bowl ring. Defensive-minded Head Coach Mike Macdonald and the Seahawks proved their defensive ability, holding the Patriots scoreless for the first three quarters.
Although Seattle is a defensive team, Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III kept the ball moving on offense. Walker won Super Bowl MVP, rushing for 135 yards on 27 carries and catching two passes for 26 yards. Seahawks Kicker Jason Myers also impressed, scoring a total of 17 points on five field goals and two extra points. The five field goals are the most ever in a Super Bowl.
Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold put on a solid performance. He completed 19 passes on 38 attempts, tossing 202 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye completed 27 passes on 43 attempts, tossing 295 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions and a fumble. Maye was unable to overcome Darnold and the Seahawks due to costly turnovers and being sacked six times. Darnold was only sacked once.
Many analysts expected the Seahawks to defeat the Patriots in the Championship. For one of the first times this season, the analysts were spot on. Longtime Seahawks fan Moulai Njie ‘26 mentions that the preseason predictions had very different forecasts for what teams would make the playoffs.
“It’s totally a crapshoot. A lot of analysts had the Seahawks last in the division. And, not only did we win the division, we won the Super Bowl. It’s kind of anyone’s game at the beginning of the season … Nobody can really predict it, you can just make your best guess,” Njie said.
Njie says that although the Seahawks were eventually favored, he was nervous yet confident about the game. Njie recalled Super Bowl 51, where the Patriots came back from a 3-28 deficit to defeat the Atlanta Falcons. He says he believed in his favorite team, but would never count out the Patriots, especially after the Seahawks lost a close game against the Patriots in Super Bowl 49. Njie was thrilled to witness the Seahawks win the Super Bowl rematch, over a decade later.
“I am so happy. There are the normal emotions associated with winning the Super Bowl, but with a rematch against the Patriots, to do it right this time, there’s really nothing like it. This is unbelievable. I’m over the moon,” Njie said.
The Patriots might have lost the Super Bowl, but fans agree they have good times to look forward to. Patriots fan Hanna Perez mentions that MVP runner-up Maye is only 23 years old and has many years ahead of him.
“I’m really optimistic because Drake Maye is so young. He still has a lot of time with the Patriots, so hopefully he can get a Super Bowl,” Perez said.
While watching the Super Bowl, Perez says she began to lose hope after the Seahawks scored several field goals in the first half.
“I was hoping that the Patriots would have a little bit more of a chance than they did … I didn’t really feel like they were going to make a comeback, because the specifics were against them,” Perez said.
On an even more personal level, Perez is very disappointed that the Patriots lost the Super Bowl because of her connection to backup quarterback Tommy DeVito. She explains the quarterback is from a town very close to her own hometown in Bergen County, New Jersey. Perez was able to meet DeVito during a meet and greet at her local mall.
Super Bowl 60 featured a blockbuster halftime performance starring Puerto Rican star Bad Bunny. His show featured cameos from musicians including Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin. Perez added that she is Hispanic, and Bad Bunny’s show meant a lot to her.
“I feel like there’s a lot of negative culture behind being Hispanic, so to watch Bad Bunny be so proud of his culture and to see him shout out all the different Latin countries was something I really enjoyed, and it actually made me a little bit emotional,” Perez said.
The 2025 NFL season had many twists and turns that eliminated the usual Super Bowl candidates of recent years and opened the spotlight to new teams. This allowed the Seahawks to get their revenge by defeating the Patriots, 12 years later.
The 2026 NFL season will begin in early September. The preseason will begin in August. No one knows what next year will bring, but fans can hope it will be another exciting year.
