Several Greyhounds set pool records as Swimming and Diving teams sweep through H2ounds Invitational 


The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both scored over 1,000 points this weekend at the H2ounds Invitational, topping five other participating schools in Loyola’s annual invitational meet at Mangione Pool.

The women’s team totaled 1,028 points to edge out second-place Marist (964.5 points). Iona College finished in third place with 847 points, followed by Howard University (326.5), Saint Peter’s University (298.5), and Virginia Military Institute (199.5).

The men’s team scored 1119.5 points, besting Marist (837.5 points) by a wide margin. Iona once again rounded out the top three with 572 points, followed by Saint Peter’s (481), Howard (401), and VMI (286).

The Greyhounds had strong performances in the relay races. The quartet of Elizabeth Walsh ‘22, Devin Cronin ‘20, Anne Hayburn ‘20, and Megan Dickey ‘21 broke the pool record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.10. 

Sung Lee ‘22, Conor Rutigliano ‘21, Jay Venit ‘20, and Jimmy Hayburn ‘22 also set a new men’s pool record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:29.66. The 200 freestyle relay also got a new record time when Lee, Hayburn, Brendan Kolar ’21, and Colin Anderson ‘21 swam for a time of 1:24.21. 

Lee set a new school record in the 100 butterfly (48.61), while Rutigliano broke the record for the 100 backstroke (49.86). Anderson had individual victories in the 200 freestyle and the 100 freestyle in addition to anchoring the 200 freestyle relay, earning him Men’s Swimmer of the Meet.

Dickey led the women’s team with victories in the 100 and 200 freestyle races, and she also won the 400 freestyle relay along with Walsh, Hayburn, and Alden Coyne ’20 to close out the meet. Schouten won the 400 individual medley and the 200 breaststroke. She also had a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay with Faith Tyranski ‘22, Emily Koegl ‘20, and Sophie Jahan ‘22. As a result, Dickey and Schouten were named co-Women’s Swimmers of the Meet.

The Hounds will take an extended break through the holidays. Their next competition is on Monday, Jan. 20 when La Salle University comes to Mangione Pool for a 12 p.m. meet.
