Women’s soccer fights for scoreless draw against Boston University

The women’s soccer team played the defending Patriot League champions, Boston University, to a 0-0 draw on Saturday, snapping a five-game losing streak against the Terriers. The Greyhounds also remain undefeated in conference play so far with a 2-0-2 record (5-5-2 overall).

Goalie Paige Sim ’23 led the Loyola backline in a stout defensive performance, making four saves. Several defenders played the entire 110 minutes of the match: Beth Eversman ’20, Julia Gray ’21, and Claire Beath ’21. Mary Theresa Corcoran ’20 played all but two minutes of the match.

However, the home side held strong on the defensive end as well, allowing the Hounds to take just five shots on goal. BU also held slight advantages in shots (12-9) and corner kicks (6-4).

Sarah Bayer ’21, Kaleigh Gallagher ‘22, and Ariel Tillman ’22 all took two shots apiece, but they either sailed wide or were stopped by Terrier goalie Morgan Messner (five saves).

The Hounds tried to boost their offense with constant personnel changes throughout the match, but nothing could pierce the BU backline.

Loyola’s final scoring opportunity came in the 103rd minute when Maddie Hart ’20 found space for a shot, but Messner saved it. It was the only shot on goal for either team in the two extra time periods.

The Greyhounds have a few more days to rest up before they travel to West Point on Saturday to take on the Army Black Knights in Patriot League play. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
