Events focus on building leaders among students

Leadership Week is a five-day series of events to be held in November, with each day featuring a new program or workshop. The programs are all directed toward showing Loyola students how to get involved in the community to benefit others and, in turn, benefit themselves. Every seminar takes place on Loyola’s campus, making it easily accessible for interested students.

As Leadership Week administrator, Hope Supernault, assistant director for Student Engagement, is particularly excited about the upcoming event. “This year, we are hoping to bring new leadership initiatives that allow all students on campus to develop leadership skills and find new ways to challenge themselves as leaders,” Supernault said. “These events are a way to introduce students to the new leadership development opportunities that will be happening on campus. Through this week of events, we hope to get students thinking about what it means to be a leader at Loyola.”

Students at universities across the country are becoming more and more aware of the satisfaction that stems from helping a person in need or from getting involved with the public and spear heading an idea or program. Supernault said, “Leadership development is a new trend on campuses. Schools around the country are starting to realize the potential for students to learn and grow as leaders while in college.”

This leadership event is a prime example of how passionate Loyola University is about helping the community and fulfilling the Jesuit tradition. “Leadership at Jesuit institutions is shaped by our other values: integrity and honesty, diversity, service, community, justice,” said Supernault. “This is what makes leadership on a Jesuit campus so special. We want students to reflect on who they are as leaders and how they can make a difference, not just for themselves, but as a man/woman for others.”

This event provides an opportunity for Loyola students to explore their roles as leaders. “I am hoping this week will also give me the opportunity to learn more from students about what other opportunities they want to see on campus and how I can support students as leaders throughout their time at Loyola,” said Supernault.

Leadership week kicks off on Monday, November 18 and ends on Friday, November 22. Events will include a Twitter contest, workshops and guest speakers, as well as a leadership fair, at which students can learn more about various leadership positions on campus.
