‘Marty Supreme,’ written by Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie, is Timothée Chalamet’s most recent movie about American table tennis player Marty Mauser. The film is loosely based on Marty Reisman, who was an American table tennis champion.
The soundtrack of the film features original songs by Daniel Lopatin like ‘The Call’ and ‘Endo’s Game.’ Some familiar songs that have recently risen back to popularity include ‘Forever Young’ by Alphaville, ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’ by Tears for Fears, and ‘I Have the Touch’ by Peter Gabriel, all of which are featured in the movie.
‘Marty Supreme’ stars Chalamet, as well as Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’ zion, Tyler ‘Tyler, The Creator’ Okonma, and more. This extensively famous cast list has caught the eyes of many viewers and critics.
In the film, Mauser is determined to be the best at everything, but makes many mistakes along the way. He has two different love interests, both married, but his main goal is to become the world champion of table tennis, and he will do anything to get there.
Students enjoyed the chaotic switch between scenes, especially the non-stop action.
“My favorite part of the movie was when the bathtub fell through the hotel ceiling because I just thought it was so funny. There was already so much going on, and it was so out of the blue,” Katie Pollock ’28 said.
Some students, however, thought there were too many random scenes and that Chalamet’s character was missing a focus; there were unfilled plot lines that went in and out of focus quickly. For instance, what happened to the dog? He was the main plot for over twenty minutes, and the audience never heard about him again.
“The movie seemed so random, and I felt like it was really missing a focus. We were focusing on ping pong for a minute, then his affair, then the dog, and then the relationship with the girl he got pregnant,” Caroline McMillion ’28 said.
‘Marty Supreme’ is gaining a lot of attention for the famous actors and actresses featured in the movie. Tyler Okonma is getting a lot of credit for his role as Mauser’s friend, Wally.
“I was laughing so hard when Marty and Wally pretended they didn’t know each other in the bowling alley while playing ping pong. Marty was being rude to him, so people would feel bad and start giving Wally money,” McMillion said.
Kevin O’Leary, a famous businessman and TV star on ‘Shark Tank,’ also caught viewers’ attention when he showed up on screen. O’Leary plays Milton Rockwell, who owns a successful pen company and is married to Kay Stone, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. Stone has an affair with Mauser early on and never loses feelings for him.
“The way they involved people who weren’t standard actors and coached them into amazing actors was super interesting. Tyler, the Creator and Kevin O’Leary from Shark Tank were amazing,” Pollock said.
While Okonma and O’Leary received high praise, they still had unfilled plot lines. The audience never truly knows what happens to Wally and his struggling family, and the repercussions against Milton Rockwell were never shown. For such an experienced actor, it’s surprising that Chalamet chose to keep some things unfinished. Could this mean a potential sequel?
