The three movies to see this fall

Get ready for an action packed fall with these top three movies: The Maze Runner, Gone Girl, and Good People. Each of these movies, coming out soon, will keep you on the edge of your seat, as they’re all filled with twists, turns, suspense and of course action.

The Maze Runner opens next week on September 19, Good People opens the following week on the 26, and Gone Girl opens October 3. These movies are all originally bestselling books and have casts who are either currently nominated for awards, or have won many awards before. If you need a break from studying in the coming weeks these movies should definitely be on your must-watch list.

If you like the stories of The Hunger Games and Divergent , The Maze Runner is for you. This is another thrilling dystopia story based off the first book of a trilogy by James Dashner. The Maze Runner stars Dylan O’Brien from Teen Wolf, Will Poulter from We’re the Millers, Thomas Brodie–Sangster from Nanny McPhee and Love Actually, and Kaya Scodelario from Skins. The film is directed by Wes Ball and written by Noah Oppenheim, Grant Pierce Myers and T.S. Nowlin.

According to The Guardian, the story is about a 16-year-old boy named Thomas who has had his memory wiped and is put in a maze with a group of boys called ‘the Gladers.’ The boys live on a farm called the Glade, and each day some boys known as ‘the Runners’ go into the maze to try to find a way out. Thomas decides he wants to become a runner as well.

The maze becomes more challenging every night because the walls shift, creating new pathways and dead ends. There are also monsters in the maze that make passing through even more difficult. Thomas soon finds out he knows more than he thought about the maze, and why he was put in there. He helps the Gladers get closer to solving the maze.

The next film to see this fall is Gone Girl, which is based off of the bestselling, page-turning novel by Gillian Flynn, who also penned the movie’s screenplay as well as two other novels, Sharp Objects and Dark Places. Gone Girl is directed by David Fincher, who is also the director of movies such as The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Fight Club. Also notable, the movie is produced by Reese Witherspoon.

Gone Girl is a thriller set in a small town in Missouri, and, according to The New York Times, is about “a fallen golden boy with a questionable moral compass, “ named Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) who is slammed by the press as a suspect for the disappearance and possible murder of his wife Amy Dunne (Rosemund Pike.)

The book itself is full of cliffhangers, surprises, and intense plot twists. The book was on Goodread’s list of Top Books of 2012; there have been 7.7 million copies sold worldwide according to The Wall Street Journal. “The movie echoes the novel’s structure, a dueling literary narrative that alternates between Nick’s first-person account and Amy’s diary entries,” said The Wall Street Journal.

The movie also stars Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry and Carrie Coon in supporting roles. But don’t expect the ending of the movie to be the same as the book: according to The Wall Street Journal, Flynn has changed the ending of the screenplay.

Good People is the final movie to to have on your list. The film is directed by Danish director Henrik Ruben Genz; the script was written by Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead screenwriter Kelly Masterson together with author of Good People, Marcus Sakey. This is also Genz’s first English-speaking film. Good People stars Kate Hudson and James Franco, who play the main characters, Tom and Anna Wright.

The crime thriller, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is about a married couple facing major financial problems and the possibility of losing their house. However, when they stumble upon their deceased tenant, circumstances change. They find a bag full of money in his apartment before the police investigate. However, this money is not the kind of money you want to keep, a fact made clear when a dangerous criminal—played by Omar Sy—shows up wanting the money too. Sy’s character says, “Didn’t you know when you find a pot of gold, there’s always a monster guarding it? ” Along the way, a cop comes up with a plan to help the couple in this both unfortunate and fortunate situation .

Mark your calendars and grab some popcorn, because these movies are bound to be the main attraction of your weekends this fall.
