Prominent conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at a ‘Prove Me Wrong’ forum hosted by Turning Point USA at Utah Valley University. A shot was fired at 12:20 p.m. MST. President Trump announced on Truth Social that he was dead at 2:40 p.m. MST.
Police and authorities are still searching for the suspect. A man was arrested and taken into custody but was not the suspect, according to Associated Press.
Students at the University fled the scene, with no other injuries or shots fired. The campus has since been evacuated.
On Truth Social, President Trump wrote:
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
Kirk was the founder and CEO of Turning Point USA, a right-wing group that advocates for conservative politics on college and university campuses in 2012. He and President Trump worked together during campaigns, with Kirk focusing primarily on influencing youth voters.
Kirk was speaking at a stop on his American Comeback Tour, on which he visited college campuses and allowed both supporters and opposers to speak with him in front of large crowds. Kirk had become a known name following viral clips from his visits and exchanges on college campuses.
This is still a developing story.
