The women’s basketball team kicked off the 2019-20 season with a trip to South Bend, Indiana, to take on the 16th-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Friday. Despite career nights from several Greyhounds, the Irish won the contest 84-60.

Loyola’s Ashley Hunter, a grad student gone for most of last season with an injury, returned with a career-high 16 points to lead the Greyhounds in scoring. Stephanie Karcz ‘20 moved into fourth place all-time in the Patriot League with 314 steals, as she had three on Friday night.

Five Greyhounds made their collegiate debuts: Emma Glezen ‘23, Emily McAteer ‘23, Brie Rozzi ‘23, Ava Therien ‘23, and Mackenzie Wagner ‘23. Wagner had nine points to lead the newcomers, and Therein had four points and three rebounds.

Notre Dame, last year’s NCAA championship runner-up, jumped out to a 12-point lead early on, but the Hounds punched back with a run of their own in the second quarter to make the score 21-16.

A close first half opened up early on in the second frame as Notre Dame went on a 19-3 run to open the half and pulled away for good. Katlyn Gilbert, who had a career-high 24 points, Destinee Walker, and Anaya Peoples, who both had 19 points, orchestrated these runs.

Notre Dame won the game running away, scoring 63 points in the second half on their way to the 84-60 victory.

The Hounds continued their tour of the Midwest to the Windy City of Chicago to face Northwestern on Sunday afternoon. Loyola fell to the Wildcats 67-46 to drop to 0-2 on the season.

Karcz moved into fifth place all-time in career rebounds for Loyola, finishing the day with nine boards to go with seven points, four steals, and three assists. Delaney Connolly led the Hounds in scoring with 15 points along with seven rebounds. Rozzi and Alexis Gray ’20 each had seven points.

The game’s leading scorer was Lindsey Pulliam with 25 points for Northwestern, last year’s Women’s National Invitation Tournament runner-up. A methodical first half led to a low score of 30-18 after 20 minutes of play.

Two other Wildcats had double-digit scoring in addition to Pulliam: Abby Wolf (14) and Abi Scheid (10). These three scorers kept the Hounds at bay for most of the second half, as the Wildcats slowly pulled away to a 67-46 victory.

The Greyhounds continue their road trip to Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
