Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams won handily on Saturday afternoon, winning 25 of 32 events at American University to start the 2019-20 season on a high note. The men’s team won 14 of 16 events on their way to a 217-72 victory, while the women’s team won 11 events for a score of 179-120.

A pair of first-years made strong first impressions for the men’s team in their collegiate debuts. Max Verheyen ’23 won the 1,000-meter freestyle (9:50.15), the 200 breaststroke (2:09.11), and the 200 individual medley (1:54.71). 

Jack Still ’23 won both diving events for the Greyhounds. He won the 1-meter dive with a score of 256.42, then the 3-meter dive with 231.45 points. 

Jimmy Hayburn ’22 won two individual events and two relays. Early in the day, he teamed with Jonathan Brooks ‘22, Sung Lee ‘22, and Jay Venit ’20 to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:34.47. Later, Hayburn joined Colin Anderson ‘21, Brandon Kolar ‘21, and Reid Hussey ’22 to win the 200 free relay (1:25.41). 

Hayburn also won the 50 free and 100 free with times of 20.84 and 46.71, respectively. Anderson and Kolar rounded out the top three in those events. 

There were five other individual winners for the men’s team. Conor Rutigliano ’21 won the 100 backstroke (52.26), and Mark Boran ‘21 won the 200 backstroke (1:55.24). David Sears ’22 won the 100 breaststroke (58.16), and Hussey won the 500 freestyle (4:45.74). Lee won the 100 butterfly (50.54) and was one hundredth of a second away from claiming the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.89.

Megan Dickey ‘21 and Elizabeth Walsh ’22 each won three events and Jessica Stolfi ’22 won the two diving events to lead the women’s side to victory. Dickey and Walsh teamed with Anne Hayburn ‘20 and Devin Cronin ’20 to swim a winning time of 1:46.10 in the 200 medley relay.

Dickey went on to win the 50 freestyle in 24.02 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 53.88 seconds. Walsh claimed the 200 fly with a time of 2:07.64, then won the 200 individual medley in 2:09.25.

Cronin won the 100 breaststroke (1:03.81), beating out teammate Emma Schouten ’21 by just over one second. Schouten and Cronin then finished first and second in the 200 breaststroke with times of 2:19.63 and 2:21.29.

Stolfi and several other Greyhounds made the leaderboard in the diving events. Stolfi won the 1-meter dive with 213.82 points, just ahead of Anna Donato ‘22, who had 210.22. Stolfi then won the 3-meter dive with 196.12 points, while Elizabeth Berta ’20 (185.85) and Donato (157.87) rounded out the top three. 

Two more Hounds claimed first place in their events. Elizabeth Romano ‘20 won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 11:00.91, while Emily Koegl ’20 (56.24) won the 100 fly. 

The swimming and diving teams return to Mangione Pool on Friday, as they take on Boston College in their home opener. The meet begins at 5 p.m.
