With an incredible entrance, it was bound to be an amazing concert from the start. Pulsating beat, flashing lights, and then suddenly you see Billie Eilish behind the screen singing, “You make me hate this city.” A minute later, she jumped through the floor of the stage.
She sounded just like she does in recordings, and even added in her own harmonies and riffs. Her setlist ranged from her EP titled, “Dont smile at me,” to her first album, “WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?”, and finally, her newest album, “Happier Than Ever.”
During “All the Good Girls go to Hell,” Eilish made sure to show images of climate change, Black Lives Matter demonstrations, and other social movements to portray to the audience certain changes in the world that still need to be made. However, I think her biggest message was that everyone who was in attendance at the concert was equal. Before performing “Oxytocin,” she made sure that everyone knew that it did not matter what you looked like: what size, color, or shape you were, or why you came to the concert, but rather the only thing that mattered was that you were having fun. She said that those who chose not to have fun were not better than anyone else because of it because to her everyone was equal. During the song, she had everyone lower to the ground and then on the count of three, we were all to jump and dance around together as equals.
I think perhaps the coolest part of attending the show was finding out that the concert was sold out and that it was her first time ever performing at Madison Square Garden. It made us all feel a part of something special, especially for anyone who had never been to one of her concerts until this night. It was a first for her and a first for us and we could celebrate it together.
It was hard not to have fun, and you could tell that her enjoyment and her audience’s enjoyment were genuine. She got to perform with her brother, and we got to enjoy it with people who were also fans. Everyone felt comfortable being themselves.
And yes, I did drive 4 hours just to see her in concert. It was worth every mile!
