Hulu recently released How I Met Your Father, a remake of the original “How I Met Your Mother” series. The 10 episode stand-alone series stars Hilary Duff as a hopeless romantic in New York City. The series is set in 2022 as Duff’s character, Sophie, is fumbling with the idea of entering her thirties as a single woman.
The series features many modern-day aspects of dating, such as using dating apps like Tinder. The show is relatable to a young crowd trying to find love in a big city. The series follows Sophie (Duff) and her on-screen best friend Valentina, played by Francia Raisa, taking on the challenges of people in their late 20’s while they balance careers, social lives, and love.
“How I Met Your Father” creates a unique nostalgia for viewers of “How I Met Your Mother” as the remake features many similar storylines of the 2005 show. The lead, Sophie, is similar to the lead of the original show, Ted Mosby, played by Josh Radnor. The leads both cope with the ups and downs of relationships, all while being advised by their surrounding friend groups.
The shows are also similar in their framing; both start with the older version of the lead telling the story of how they met their spouse to their current children. Kim Cattrall voices an older Sophie recounting her early years to her son in the same way that Bob Saget voiced the older version of Ted, using his dating struggles as lessons to his children throughout the show.
The first episode of “How I Met Your Father” was dedicated to Saget, as it premiered just after his unexpected death.
The series creates a lighthearted, feel-good show, with a sense of nostalgia which makes for an easy, binge-worthy show for the viewers.
“How I Met Your Father” is available now on Hulu.
