Gallant dresses, white gloves, and royal courtings have made their way to Netflix, entertaining subscribers in the new standing drama, “Bridgerton.” Based on the book series written by Julia Quinn, this 1800s, regency period show has challenged tradition by opening a new door for modern classical music, diverse casting, and contemporary character development— all while maintaining a historical nuance.

Call it a reflection of modern society, Bridgerton’s soundtrack employs the harmonious strokes of violins and cellos in covering Top 100 songs like “thank u, next,” by Ariana Grande and “Girls Like You,” by Maroon 5. Unlike other films set in the late 1700s to 1800s, Bridgerton’s composer, Kris Bowers, was able to strike many young viewers’ hearts by placing modern music in period pieces.

The centerpiece of the show is best characterized through the narration of Lady Whistledown, done by Julie Andrews. Lady Whistledown opens the season with the introduction of the high-class Bridgerton family. Daphne Bridgerton, the Queen’s “Diamond of the First Water” and eldest Bridgerton daughter, is portrayed as the most suitable London mistress in the social season’s marriage market.

From only wishing to marry within the first courting season to pulling her own weight as the Duchess of Hastings, Daphne’s character begins to develop from a young lady who is sheltered by the riches and traditions of her own family, to a brave heroine, whose self-made independence is relatable to many women in the modern day.

Producer Shonda Rhimes flawlessly created a historical society with costumes and a cast that also shows the ripples of the 21st century. Rhymes’ cast consists of white and black actors and actresses, which provides just one more reason why this series is a top 10 Netflix hit.

The dashing Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset, is an eligible bachelor that adds more than just romance to Bridgerton’s drama. As the episodes unravel Simon’s heartbreaking relationship with his father, it is clear why he has such a cold demeanor towards marrying and having kids. Viewers can see the rare perspective of Simon’s role as a young man who is held responsible for carrying the title of a Duke and his innermost fears and insecurities of loving again.

Luxurious balls fill the London nights with silk gloves and long gowns whose vibrant colors sneak peeks at the 21st century. Bridgerton’s costume designs were a fan favorite, filling each episode and scene with flamboyant outfits. The silk and feathered gowns were delicately designed by 71-year-old Ellen Mirojnick, who stated in a recent article with Vogue Magazine that Daphne’s wardrobe alone resulted in 104 costumes.

More dresses and modern classical music are to come: the Bridgerton series has recently made an announcement on Instagram, saying that it has been granted a second season focusing on Anthony Bridgerton’s romance. Let the gossip begin.
