The women’s basketball team, dressing just eight healthy players, scored the final 12 points of the game to steal a 50-44 win at Navy on Saturday. The Greyhounds improved to 6-15 overall and 3-7 in conference play.
Alexis Gray ’20 continued to produce on the offensive end with 17 points. Stephanie Karcz posted six points, five assists, four steals, and 14 rebounds, grabbing her 1000th career rebound in the process. Emily McAteer ’23 and grad student Ashley Hunter had nine and eight points, respectively.
Navy controlled the pace of the first half, managing to put together a 24-13 lead midway through the second quarter. The Hounds ended the half with a 10-0 run, including seven points from Gray. This late run would mirror what occurred in the final minutes of the game.
A back-and-forth battle early in the second half yielded few points for both teams. A Navy three-pointer put the home team up 44-38 with six minutes to go, but these would be the Midshipmen’s final points.
The Hounds put together a 12-0 run to close out the game. Hunter completed the comeback with a layup with 2:21 remaining, then Hannah Niles ’20 hit a three-pointer with 1:25 left to give the Hounds a two-possession lead. They hung on and hit some final free throws to hold off Navy and pick up the win.
Loyola, having won three of its last five games, have the week off before they travel to Bucknell for a Saturday game at 2 p.m.
