Earlier this month, Megan Thee Stallion teamed up with Maroon 5 to release their single “Beautiful Mistakes.” The song has a soft melodic feel to it with a hint of “hot girl summer.” This is the first collaboration between the two. Maroon 5 is known for their sultry R&B love songs like “Payphone,” “Sunday Morning,” and “She Will Be Loved.” This is very different from rapper Megan Thee Stallion, who raps about being a confident, sex-positive woman with songs like “WAP” featuring Cardi B, “Freaky Girls,” and “Savage” featuring Beyonce. Together, the two worked to make a new hit single sure to liven up Summer 2021.
Adam Levine sings the first few verses of the song and talks about wanting to be with a woman who he knows isn’t good for him, but he’s so infatuated with the idea that he wants to risk it all, anyway. The song is filled with heartbreaking lyrics but is backed with a catchy and upbeat melody. Levine sings:
“I fill my days with the way you walk/ And fill my nights with broken dreams/ I make up lies inside my head/ Like one day you’ll come back to me.”
In the pre-chorus, Levine sings about not holding on to the woman but still being depressed that she is no longer with him. The chorus of the song contains the lyrics, “Beautiful mistakes/ I make inside my head/ She’s naked in my bed/ And now we lie awake/, makin’ beautiful mistakes”. Here, Levine talks about making up scenarios in his head out of their relationship and realizing that they won’t happen.
Megan Thee Stallion’s verse follows after the bridge, “Nah-nah-nah, in my head/ Nah-nah-nah, in my bed/ Nah-nah-nah, ayy/ Makin’ beautiful mistakes”. The rapper’s verse seems to be in response to heartbroken Levine who is basically begging for his love to return. Megan raps about being okay without her ex and continuing to live her life after the relationship ends.
This collaboration isn’t so unexpected, considering Maroon 5 collaborated with rapper Cardi B for the 2017 single, “Girls Like You.” This new single is similar to “Girls like You” because of the catchy upbeat and summer feeling the song gives off.
