Charlie Puth has showcased his range of vocal and musical talent with radio hits like “Marvin Gaye,” “One Call Away,” and “See you Again.” And on April 2 , Baltimore residents were lucky enough to see Puth perform these songs and others from his new album “Nine Track Mind” at Rams Head Live!
Opening the concert for Puth was singer/dancer Sophie Beem — who recently signed with Beyoncé — and upcoming singer/songwriter Phoebe Ryan. Due to his incredible vocal and instrumental talents, Puth created an enjoyable and interactive atmosphere for his fans with his authentic personality and relatable lyrics. His tour began early in March and will continue throughout the U.S. until April 23, where it will come to an end in Utah. Puth will then travel internationally up until late August.
Puth’s fame began when he started to upload acoustic versions of songs on YouTube. After he grew in popularity, he signed with Warner Music Group and released his first official album in 2016 through Atlantic Records. Since the start of his career, he has worked with famous singers such as Meghan Trainor, Selena Gomez, Shy Carter and Wiz Khalifa. His unique music style and ability to capture pure emotion with his lyrics has allowed his fan base to continually expand.
As stated in interviews and on-stage, Charlie writes all of his songs based on events from his past, whether it be about relationships and heartbreak, or the struggles of not being able to write a song. During the concert, Charlie spent most of the time singing and playing the piano. In fact, several of his songs, including “One Call Away,” have been recorded as piana pella, meaning the entire song is played on the piano without the lyrics. According to Puth, piano playing has been a vital part of his life, and he hopes to keep experimenting with new styles and genres such as doo-wop, jazz, R&B and hip-hop. At the moment, his main focus is playing music that is soulful and expressive.
In the last two years Puth has received several awards including the Teen Choice Award for R&B/Hip Hop song, the Teen Choice Award Song from a movie/TV show and the Kid’s Choice Award for Favorite Collaboration. He has been interviewed and supported by Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show and by Ryan Seacrest on his radio show “On Air with Ryan Seacrest.” After his tour, he hopes to return to writing and recording and will hopefully release a new album in the near future.
