The Video Music Awards (VMAs) never seem to disappoint. Over the years, viewers have witnessed Lil Kim’s revealing purple outfit, Britney Spears and Madonna locking lips and Miley Cyrus’ twerking. MTV’s unique awards show always delivers a flavorful evening of performances and music videos.Of course, this year wasn’t any different. This eccentric show, which aired on Sunday, August 30, gained a great deal of attention, being talked about for days afterwards on Twitter, Instagram, and many other social media outlets. But for those of you who missed the VMAs, here is a recap of the top five events that unfolded…
- Miley Cyrus (along with a set of obscure outfits) hosted the show
When it was announced that Miley Cyrus would be hosting this year’s VMAs, everyone began to prepare for an evening of crazy. As most people know, Cyrus has a knack for embracing her weird side (as of late, she has been known for wearing scandalous get-ups in public, making it clear that she enjoys smoking marijuana, and dedicating an album to her deceased pets). What stood out the most about Cyrus’ hosting was probably her unique set of ensembles. She had 11 outfit changes in total, each of which were just as interesting and revealing as the previous one. In typical Cyrus fashion, the singer sported a strappy, chandelier-looking dress that barely covered her figure, a clear, plastic dress with large, colorful polka dots, a bra made to look like a set of eyes paired with a skirt meant to resemble lips and other obscure clothing. Perhaps it was a good thing that Cyrus had these outfits to keep the audience entertained, because she truly didn’t bring much more to the table in terms of hosting. By the end of the show, viewers were simply left to sit and gawk at her bizarre ways.
- Justin Bieber cried
As Justin Bieber finished a performance of his latest single, “What Do You Mean?” the young pop star unexpectedly broke down in tears. These waterworks confused everyone at the time until three nights later when Bieber appeared on “The Tonight Show.” Host Jimmy Fallon asked him what the meaning behind the tears truly was, and Bieber genuinely responded that he was simply touched by the audience’s support and praise. “I wasn’t expecting them to support me in the way they did. Last time I was at an awards show I was booed,” said Bieber to Fallon. This truthful answer caused even more support for Bieber, and there was soon a positive flood of comments and opinions on Twitter.
- Nicki Minaj initiated a fight with Miley Cyrus
Prior to the VMAs, Miley Cyrus was interviewed for the New York Times and was asked about how she believed Nicki Minaj handled a Twitter fight with singer Taylor Swift. Cyrus called Minaj, “Not too kind,” and “Not very polite.” So it’s no surprise that when Minaj won her VMA award for the best hip-hop video for her song “Anaconda,” Minaj turned to address Cyrus at the end of her acceptance speech. Minaj said, “And now back to this b***h that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press, Miley, what’s good?” Cyrus looked shocked at first, but smoothly responded, “Hey, we’re all in this industry, we all do interviews and we all know how they manipulate s**t. Nicki, congratu-f******-lations.” Viewers weren’t exactly sure whether or not this argument was staged, or if these songstresses actually have real beef…perhaps we’ll never know.
- Taylor Swift made an appearance with her loyal group of friends
As many know, Taylor Swift has a solid (and stacked) group of best girlfriends. Her pals include singer Selena Gomez, model Gigi Hadid, actress Lena Dunham and many more. Of course, these women (along with several more of Swift’s friends) made an appearance in her music video for her popular single “Bad Blood”. When Swift won the award for Video of the Year for this same song, her group of besties accompanied her onstage. Swift was all smiles as she accepted her award alongside her friends, exclaiming, “These women helped create their parts, helped write their roles and decided what they wanted to be.” Congratulations, Taylor!
- Kanye West announced that he’s running for president in 2020
During a 10-minute long rant that Kanye West embarked on after receiving the coveted Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, he ended his speech by announcing his plans to run for president in the year 2020. During his length speech, West thanked Taylor Swift — who presented him with the award — and proceeded to note how artists can have such a lasting effect on people. West explained how he’s going to continue to fight for what he believes in, even if it might be what people don’t want to hear. Finally, West said, “And yes, as you probably could’ve guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president.” Kanye’s epic rant was thoughtful, yet strange, and left everyone scratching their heads as to whether or not he’s actually going to run for president when 2020 rolls around.
