In a game marred by the number of fouls called (55 total) Loyola was unable to secure a home opening win, losing to Tennessee State 86-71. Tyler Hubbard led Loyola with 21 points, while Wayne Martin for Tennessee State had a game high in points and rebounds at 27 and 21, respectively.
In the first half it was a very even contest, with each team putting in multiple scoring runs and each catching lucky breaks. Almost all of the stats for the first half were nearly equal for each team. Loyola 10-26 from the field to go with a total of 16 rebounds for the Hounds. Tennessee State went 13-28 and had 15 rebounds.
Neither team was quite able to establish control of the game early on. Every time one team seemed to be pulling away, the other had a quick answer, but there was no real flow to the game given the foul calls. Andre Walker had a very balanced first-half for the Hounds with five points, four assists, three steals and two rebounds. The excitement of Reitz Arena hit a climax when Tennessee State missed a wide-open dunk on the fast break with a little over seven Minutes to play in the half.
But unfortunately for the Hounds, the second half was all Tennessee State. They were able to make their shots and free throws while Loyola’s shooting went cold. Wayne Martin continued to impress, and single-handedly took charge offensively and defensively.
Loyola’s foul troubles also assisted Tennessee State, having six players with three or more fouls for the Greyhounds. Chancellor Bernard and Jarred Jones both fouled out for the Greyhounds.
Loyola looks to improve on the result as the host LIU Brooklyn on Monday November 16, with tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Reitz.
