You may know her from NBC’s The Voice now Judith Hill brings her unique brand of talent to Rams Head Live in Annapolis on Monday November 4.
How did you first get started in music?
I started recording in the studio at age four. I was very lucky to have such musical parents who taught me and pushed me at an early age. Also, I was constantly surrounded by so many amazing singers and musicians who worked with my parents. I was like a sponge that soaked it all up. Who are your biggest influences?Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Sly+The Family Stone, Michael Jackson, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder.
Describe your upcoming album’s style.
A pop/soul album with influences of world music.
What is your favorite song you have recorded so far?
Abracadabra
I know you got your start as a back up singer & in documentaries; do you like performing live better or for film?
I love performing live. Most of the film stuff I’ve done has just been capturing footage of my life on stage. But, I would love to do more scripted film stuff.
How is life on the road?
Its been a blast! I have a great band and great team of people that have made this experience so memorable. This has been one long, crazy road trip across the country and into Canada. A show in different cities almost every night. This is my first tour as a solo act, and it is hardest I’ve ever worked. But, I’m so grateful for the opportunity.
When you were on The Voice did you expect to be touring with Josh Groban? What made you audition in the first place?
When I was on The Voice, I did not expect to be touring with Josh Groban. It was a lovely surprise and I was so excited when I got the news. I auditioned on The Voice because I saw it as a great opportunity to showcase my style as a solo artist.
Why should college students listen to the music?
College students should enjoy this music because its edgy, fun, yet heartfelt and classic. One of my biggest goals is to bring soul music back. I feel like it has taken a back seat in the last decade and I want to be one of the artists to celebrate the history and bring it forward.
