Friday, Nov. 13, was a big day for the music industry with the release of One Direction’s fifth studio album, “Made in the A.M.” With the recent departure of beloved member, Zayn Malik, the quartet is definitely not the band they used to be. In fact, Malik’s leave might have been, dare I say, a good thing. Harry, Niall, Liam and Louis say they are much stronger than they used to be, and feel as if his absence only made them closer as both friends and bandmates.
Despite lacking Malik, “Made in the A.M.” beautifully highlights each member’s voice and talents. This album shows growth since previous records, especially since their debut album, “Up All Night.” Instead of “What Makes You Beautiful,” the young, innocent hit we all know and love, One Direction now tugs at heartstrings with “Perfect” and “Hey Angel.” Songs like these prove that the group has left their teeny-bopper days behind. All 17 songs demonstrate an adult-like sound, leaning more towards the rock-n-roll side of music as opposed to the pop side. It is easy to tell that the band took major inspiration from their favorite musical geniuses. For example, track number 10, “What a Feeling,” gives off a Fleetwood Mac vibe. I think it is beneficial for 1D, or any other group, to experiment with their sound as they get older. This is just one way to appeal to a larger demographic and gain greater recognition.
Fans were worried when they found out that Justin Bieber was dropping his album, “Purpose,” the same day as 1D, but the group did not let anyone or anything drag them down. Already off of the album comes four singles: “Infinity,” “Drag Me Down,” “Perfect,” and the latest, “History.” All four have placed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart — “Drag Me Down” even getting to number three. As of right now, the British boy banders and Bieber are neck in neck in terms of sales.
A few months ago, One Direction frightened fans with the announcement of a yearlong hiatus starting in 2016. Many thought Malik was to blame while others concluded that this was the end of the group for good. Luckily, the band promises to return in 2017, admitting that they just need a break. After being on the road for the past four years, I agree that it is time for a much needed rest. At least fans have a fresh new album to hold them over in the meantime.
Until next time, One Direction, see you in 2017.
