On March 10, U.K. singer Jorja Smith released her newest single “Addicted.” Jorja Smith is a relatively new artist in the R&B music scene. Her first and only album thus far is titled “Lost and Found,” released in 2018. She also released an EP titled “Project 11” in 2016, before her album. Smith has been featured on several other projects by big names in her genre, like Kali Uchis’ “Tyrant,” Enny’s “Peng Black Girls,” Drake’s “Get it Together,” and “I am” which was featured on the soundtrack for the movie “Black Panther.” “Addicted” is the first single that the 23-year-old singer from Walsall has released for 2021.
All of Smith’s songs tell a story, and “Addicted” isn’t any different. The song is about being in love with someone to the point where other people tell you that you should give up pursuing that person. The song opens with the lyrics:
“Too far in it, too far gone/ She knows what’s in it, /she knows what’s wrong/ She just can’t quit it, her heart’s so numb/ Hurts to live it but worse to run.” Jorja sings about being too deep in love and falling too hard for someone.
The chorus of the song is about someone being addicted to loving someone without being loved back. The lyrics are: “The hardest thing/ You are not addicted to me/ I’m the only thing you should need/ You should be addicted to me/ The hardest thing/I am too selfless to leave/ You’re the only thing that I need/ You should be addicted to me.”
The song has a soft melody that accompanies the painfully heartfelt lyrics that Jorja sings of wanting someone to be as addicted to you as you are to them. Jorja wrote a long heartfelt caption on her Instagram about the excitement she had for the release of “Addicted” and its music video. She said:
“ I can’t wait to share all this music with u all.”
It is safe to say that there are more singles and a possible album on the way from Jorja Smith.
“Addicted” is available now on all streaming platforms.
