Loyola’s Student Government Association (SGA) is gearing up for another academic year. In late September, SGA promoted the fall election cycle to the Class of 2027 and 2028 to join their ranks such as Maria Torchia ’27, a newly elected member of the Class of 2027 Senate.
“I ran for SGA because I wanted to give back to Loyola. I really enjoyed my freshman year and had many ideas about what could make my sophomore year even more fun,” Torchia said. “I also care about my fellow classmates and how they experience campus life at Loyola. I wanted to add my thoughts and opinions to better their experiences so when we look back at our lives in college, we can say they were some of the best years of our lives.”
This fall election cycle provided underclassmen the opportunity to run for positions such as class president, assembly, and senate. Each of these positions comes with different duties to ensure all of SGA operates smoothly. According to the SGA Constitution and By-Laws, the class president act as liaisons between the students in their respective class year and Loyola’s administration. They also organize meetings with their assembly members to plan and coordinate events specifically for their class year.
Each class year has its respective assembly that consists of five members and is chaired by the class president. The assembly’s responsibility is to help their class president plan social events to bring their respective class together.
The senate composed of three elected representatives from each class year must work with the executive board and Loyola’s administration to create initiatives that improve the student experience at Loyola. The senate members ensure all policies are followed and all responsibilities of each position within SGA are carried out properly. Lastly, it’s their job to review and revise the SGA Constitution & By-Laws as necessary.
These students campaigned for their desired position by collecting signatures, creating posters, and taking to social media to collect votes. Below are the newly elected SGA members for the 2024-2025 school year.

After letting the news sink in, these newly elected student leaders are already looking to make the most out of their leadership roles such as newly elected Class of 2028 President Alfred Segbe.
“As a member of the SGA, I hope to reaffirm and commit myself to the ideals that make Loyola… Loyola. From our commitment to fostering a community of honesty, integrity, and diversity to our Jesuit values; I hope to create a strong sense of community. I hope that this semester we can make the SGA accessible by any means possible when it comes to those wanting to make clubs, serve their community, and show off their gifts. I just want the people to have fun all while ‘igniting the world’ and I will aim to enable that in my position,” Segbe said.
Congratulations to all the newly elected members of SGA. We cannot wait to see what great work you will do.
