Who wouldn’t be excited for a Rom Com with Imogen Poots, Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston? “She’s Funny That Way” is unpredictable, humorous and hopeful. You may think you know what’s going to happen next, but then someone gets slapped in the face or caught hiding in a shower. The actors are the main reason behind the movie’s credibility and hilarity. The way the characters’ insane personalities are portrayed leave you in either awe or hysterics.
The movie is about a young woman living with her parents and trying to thrive as an actress. To support herself, she sleeps with men for money. She thinks of it in this way: men take girls on dates to get them to bed, at least she’s getting paid for it. However, one of the men she sleeps with ends up changing her life and being the director of the play she is cast in. After all of the insanity that occurs in the characters’ lives, they end up exactly where they are supposed to be.
Imogen Poots exceeds in her role.. Her life is filled with hardship, but she views it through her rose colored lenses. She’s not a call girl, she’s a muse; her dad isn’t an unemployed, compulsive liar, he’s an inventor and even though she has a stalker, it’s nice to know someone cares. She finds good in the most outlandish of people and that’s why you fall in love with her.
The other lead character, played by Owen Wilson, makes you question even the best men. He has his kids, his wife, his work and his call girls. At first, you may want to like him because he comes off as kind and caring, but later you find out he only wants to help you because it gives him a rush. Through all of his lies, however, you still end up liking him. He is sweet and just a little crazy. But who isn’t?
I can’t say it enough—the actors’ abilities to play each role with such understanding of their characters truly make the movie. Even though we would all be terrified to know any of these characters in real life, they are still relatable. Jennifer Anniston’s character knows she’s a hot mess, but owns her personality. Owen Wilson’s character knows he’s using people and betraying trust, but sometimes you just can’t help yourself. Imogen Poots’ character does what she has to in order to make it through another day. A lot can be learned from the characters in this film.
I’m saddened to say, the ending did not give the movie justice. It didn’t tie into the web of characters laid out during the entire movie. It should have ended in chaos. That being said, it has a deeper meaning than the typical romantic comedy, which makes it special. It’s filled with desire, lust, sex, manipulation and lies, but somehow proves that life goes on. People get hurt and people are selfish but that doesn’t mean we can’t all get along.
The show must go on…
