The Loyola Black Student Association (BSA) is preparing for its annual fashion show. This year, the theme is “Alter Ego: Cities of Soul,” with the goal of unveiling the vibrant beauty and rich authenticity of Black culture in unprecedented ways.
The highly anticipated event will take place on Friday, April 4, at 8 p.m. in Reitz Arena. The show brings together students, designers, and performers in a celebration of culture, creativity, and self-expression.
Scene one specifically brings to life the vibrant cultures of New York and New Jersey, focusing on the distinctive fashion, music, and other unique elements that contribute to the rich essence of these iconic places. Krystal Sowah ‘25, a scene leader for scene one, emphasized the show’s deeper meaning,
“We want it to be an entire production where it gives people a sense of home. We’re away from our hometowns, but we’re bringing that back to Loyola and on the stage, so we want everybody to feel at home,” Sowah said.
For many, the fashion show is not just a performance, but a meaningful expression of identity and inclusion.
Ngozi Mahjied ‘25, a sociology major and international business minor, said she wants people to see the hard work the BSA puts into it, not just for entertainment value but to experience the richness of an inclusive community.
“I think it’s about team bonding and finding those similar to you, and the second part is displaying different parts of culture in a school that’s a PWI [predominantly white institution],” Mahjied said.
Since its inception in 1998, this show has evolved from a small campus gathering to one of the most popular events on campus, consistently drawing in hundreds of students, families, faculty, and friends.
Bianca Gerald ‘25, both a director and a model in the production, said she is excited for the show’s new elements.
“The whole show has a very cohesive quality. Everything comes together; there are individual pieces, but there are also overall cohesive pieces to the show. There will definitely be excitement… and music that your parents know, and you may know,” Gerald said.
The show will bring to life a vibrant tapestry of cities, including Miami, Baltimore/DMV, New York, New Jersey, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New Orleans. Each city highlights the unique elements that make Black culture so dynamic and influential.
Alyssa Williams ‘25, president of BSA, is also a scene leader and model.
“We want it to feel like you’re at a party and you’re hearing some of your favorite music from all time periods. We want to keep the audience happy and hype. We want to keep them engaged. We want you guys to feel like you are partying with us,” Williams said.
