The 51st annual Mayor’s Christmas Parade took place in the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore this past Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024. The parade, which was originally an idea from 1972 Baltimore Mayor William Donald Schaefer, has become a treasured annual holiday celebration that reaches more than 20,000 people. The event also helps local businesses along the parade route, which begins on Falls Road, continues along 36th Street, and concludes on Chestnut Avenue, between 36th Street and 37th Street.
WLOY Loyola Radio, Loyola University Maryland’s award-winning college radio station, has been a part of the parade procession for 12 years. In the past, WLOY has presented a Peanuts-themed float complete with Snoopy’s red doghouse and festive outfits.
This year, however, WLOY has retired the classic green van and Snoopy costume. Instead, staff members worked to decorate WLOY’s new electric van with tan and white felt in a festive gingerbread house theme. Student workers dressed up in gingerbread costumes and handed out 3,400 candy canes to children and event attendees along the parade route. WLOY workers were accompanied by festive Christmas music from the electronic PA system and members of the Loyola University Maryland Dance Team with shimmering green and silver pom poms.
