AP promptly stated that Prince George’s County Executive and Democratic candidate for the Senate, Angela Alsobrooks, is the winner of the Maryland Senate race over the former Republican Governor of Maryland, Larry Hogan.
Alsobrooks, 53, has held elected office since 2011, first as the state’s attorney for Prince George’s County until later being elected county executive in 2018. She will continue to hold this position until she is sworn in as a Senator in January 2025. One of the major issues Alsobrooks campaigned on was restoring nationwide access to abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
Alsobrooks’ opponent, Hogan, 68, was first elected as Maryland Governor in 2014 and served until 2023, often remembered for his COVID policies during the pandemic’s peak. He was seen by some as an outsider within his party, being considered a liberal or moderate Republican by many, going as far as to reject the endorsement of Donald Trump. Hogan spent much of his campaign highlighting his moderate stances and painting his opponent as untrustworthy.
Maryland is usually one of the most firmly Democratic states in the country, but due to Hogan’s popularity separate from his party, the Senate race was projected to be much more competitive than a typical Maryland election. This made it a focus nationally this election cycle as a potential pickup for the Republicans that, in the end, did not pay off.
