On Tuesday Oct. 22, the Department of Communication and Media held their annual ‘Falling for Comm’ information session on the quad from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Falling for Comm allowed students to connect with faculty and student organization leaders and become more familiar with the Communication and Media department.
Students were able to learn about the Communication major and its various specialties such as advertising and public relations, digital media, journalism, media and society, and their brand-new addition: the business journalism minor.
Senior Affiliate Faculty Member Timothy Tooten talked about how beneficial Communication can be for Loyola students in any aspect of their careers.
“I think it’s important. Whatever field you do, you’re going to need Communication. Let’s say you want to be lawyer or a doctor, good! You’re going to need communication. Just give it a try because you will need those skills down the road.”
The event was a way for the department to promote its brand-new name: Communication and Media, allowing new students who might be interested in pursuing a career in the Communication field to get to know the opportunities they have on campus.
Chris Kimani, program assistant for the Communication and Media department, shared the importance of Falling for Comm for both the program and the students.
“We feel that it is important to get our name out there and promote the rebranding of the program and also just inform students about courses that we offer in the program. Probably the most important thing is students being aware of what Communication and Media is and what we have to offer.”
The event provided a variety of snacks, music, and a raffle for students. Student leaders from student media organizations such as The Greyhound and WLOY Radio were present at the event. Organizations such as these informed students about the wide range of opportunities to grow as members of the community while getting hands-on experience and life-lasting skills.
