The Office of International Programs has officially kicked off the 2025-2026 study abroad application season. It offers 60+ study abroad program options in over 30+ countries around the world. There are many opportunities to study abroad such as one or two semester-long trips during junior year, summer programs, and holiday break tour opportunities. More than two-thirds of students decide to study abroad during their junior year. One of those students was Riley Mitchell ‘25 who studied abroad during Spring 2024 in Newcastle, England.
“I decided to study abroad because I have always been interested in traveling, but had never been out of the country. I was not sure when I would get another opportunity like this to travel across the world and live and learn in a different country for almost six months. I was excited at the idea of becoming fully immersed in a new culture, lifestyle, and experiencing part of my college experience in a completely new way,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell described her experience as being very transformational, making her more independent, confident, and comfortable taking risks. She allowed herself to be open to trying new things, which helped to broaden her worldview.
“While studying in Newcastle, I did things and said yes to experiences and opportunities I do not think I would have been able to do before going abroad. I got to see things I never thought I would and was able to do it all with some of my best friends as well as new friends I made once I arrived. I had the incredible opportunity to travel to nine different countries, visit various historical sites, and experience a different learning style and education system,” Mitchell said.
Alex Right ‘25 shared how she also experienced personal growth while studying abroad in Newcastle, England. While abroad, she believes what she learned about herself has made her think much more deeply about what she wants for her future.
“I grew as a person through traveling independently through England, Ireland, and Europe. I grew through my academic experiences as well, attending a school that is very opposite when compared to Loyola. These experiences allowed me to become more confident in myself and my choices. My time abroad also gave me the chance to think deeply about my future and what goals I have for myself,” Right said.
Both seniors believe their transition into this new environment was made easier through Loyola and the support measures that it provides to students studying abroad. All study abroad locations offer some level of support, but Loyola’s Flagship study abroad programs offers a full-time onsite director dedicated to Loyola students. Those four locations are Bangkok, Leuven, Madrid, and Newcastle.
Any Loyola students who are interested in learning more about study abroad opportunities and how to apply should check out the Office of International Programs website or visit the office located in Humanities 132. All applications to study abroad for the 2025-2026 academic year are due Dec. 4, 2024.
