The men’s soccer team topped three-time defending Patriot League champion Colgate on Saturday. Jonathan Sousa ’20 scored the game-winner in overtime to give the Hounds the 2-1 victory. The win brought the Hounds to 7-7 overall, 5-1 in the month of October, and third in the Patriot League.

In addition to Sousa’s game-winner, Brian Saramago ’20 scored his fifth goal of the season. Daniel Osuji ‘23 and Barry Sharifi ’20 assisted on Saramago’s goal, while Josh Fawole ’20 assisted on Sousa’s game-winner.

Despite holding a significant advantage in shots (14-2), Colgate could not pull ahead of the Greyhounds. Loyola struck first in the 33rd minute when some crisp passing from Osuji and Sharifi left Saramago wide open in front of the goal.

The very next possession, Mason Miller answered with a shot to the top left corner to even the score at 1. Colgate continued to barrage Loyola with shots, but Chase Vosvick ‘21 (three saves) and the backline withstood the attack.

The game took a turn in the 63rd minute, as the Greyhounds began to play more aggressively on the offensive end. They had 11 of the game’s final 12 shot attempts, but none of them found their mark.

The overtime period took less than three minutes to decide a winner. Fawole sprinted along the right side of the box and sent a cross to a cutting Sousa, who deflected the ball just enough to get it past goalie Jacob Harris. This is Sousa’s second game-winner of the season, as he scored the game’s lone goal in a 1-0 victory against Bucknell on Oct. 2.

Loyola continues their road trip today to No. 4 Wake Forest in their final non-conference game of the regular season. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
