Demi Lovato and Sam Fischer are done worrying about what other people say. On Feb. 4, platinum selling singer/songwriter Demi Lovato and Australian singer/songwriter Sam Fischer released a song titled “What Other People Say.” The song is an honest, emotional confessional that begins with Lovato singing, “Thought when I grew up I would be the same / As the ones who gave me my last name / I would not give in, I would not partake / In the same old drugs everyone else takes.” The song is a mid tempo, pop ballad with powerful lyrics. “What Other People Say” is a release of feeling, aimed at understanding how far away one can get from the person they really are, in effort to be liked.

Fischer said to Billboard in a statement about the song:

“It’s about the pressures of society and how getting caught up with the wrong things can change you.” Lovato added, “This song is a reflection on what it’s like to lose who you truly are in an effort to please other people and society. It’s why I wanted to make this song with Sam – ultimately it’s about two humans coming together to connect and find solutions to their problems.”

In an interview with Metro, Fischer said he was “honored” to have worked with the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer.

“She connected so deeply with it,” Fischer said, noting that working with Lovato was unlike any other experience in his life. “That girl works so hard, everything is so immaculate with her,” he said. “She’s incredibly sweet.”

Fischer starts the second verse, “I wish I could shelter the boy I knew / From the constant hell I’d put him through / ‘Cause I’m all grown up and I’m black and blue / I could use some tape, I  could use some glue.” Lovato and Fischer’s voices blend well together on the second chorus when they sing, “I’m better than that, I’m better than that / I should be living my life so I go to heaven and never come back.” Like most songs Lovato is a part of, the song has an important, meaningful message. “What Other People Say” is a commanding song about making mistakes because you worry about other people’s opinions.
